Four-Day Needlework Retreat one person with single room.

It’s nice to be able to craft in peace. It's also nice to share your inspiration and your experience with others. In the Needlework Retreat (17-20 February 2018) you can enjoy and experience both. All lovers of textile arts handicraft are welcome, both novice and advanced.

Enjoy some time for yourself in the beautiful boscage of the Geldersche Achterhoek. Reside at an inspiring and comfortable location where you don’t have to worry about anything. Your meals will be cooked for you and coffee & tea are always within reach. Enjoy some needlework, exchange experiences, go for a wonderful hike or just flow away near a cosy fire… Everything is possible.

Anything goes

During this 4-day needlework retreat you can go at your own pace. Want to join a workshop? Do it. Do you prefer to do your own thing? That’s fine as well.

All the participants are lovers of textile arts handicraft, so you’ll find a lot of inspiration and experience – for everyone that likes to share and learn together.

But… creativity should flow freely… go at your own pace. Anything goes.

The only fixed moments during the day are when we have our meals together.

For whom?

The retreat is for all lovers of textile arts handicraft. It doesn’t matter whether you’re “advanced” or only know some basic stitches. What really matters is that you can find some rest while working on an handicraft of your choosing.

That’s why we ask you to bring your own work and tools with you. The retreat isn’t meant to put you under time pressure while working on a project, or to send you back home with loads of homework. If you leave with a lot of new ideas that’s great. But do bring that one piece that you can’t seem to find the time for, or load your bags with all your WIP’s (Work-in-Progress, unfinished projects).

Centrum Athanor  Athanor Boomgaard  Vuurplaats

We will be staying at the unique and inspiring  Centrum Athanor, in Lochem. Do visit their website, for more information about this beautiful place.

It has a relaxed and homely atmosphere. Centrum Athanor has an huge garden – let’s just call it a park – as well. With big, old trees, thickets and open spots. Wonderful to go for a walk and to explore. There are plenty places for you to sit and enjoy nature. It has big seated terraces so whenever the weather allows it you can work, eat or talk outside. If it’s cold or raining, outdoor lovers can go to the big shed which is heated by terrace heaters.

During the retreat there won’t be any other groups in or around the premises.

Centrum Athanor shares a border with Landgoed Ampsen: woods, fields and characteristic farms. A beautiful area to go for a hike. Quiet and not that many visitors. Maybe you’ll spot a deer, mouflons or even a badger. On the other side of Centrum Athanor you’ll find wide fields, roads with large oak trees and the distinctive acacia trees. Especially during sunrise and sunset it’s a beautiful view to behold.

The direct surroundings are very quiet and at night it is still really dark. An ideal place for you to retreat to. Let things be and take some time for yourself.

If participants are interested we – Joos and Michèle – can organize a workshop on Monday and Tuesday morning. There is no fixed program and no fixed subjects. We’d love to hear what people are interested in and use that to create a workshop.

For example, some subjects we can corporate into the workshop are: circular knitting, knitting (toe-up) socks, knitting top-down sweaters, Fair Isle knitting, Brioche (English Rib), double knitting, cable knitting, i-cord cast-on and cast-off, Alabama Chanin-style needlework, decorative stitches (embroidery) on your sewing, several knitting techniques like the English seam and flat felled seam (denim seam), several crochet stitches.

It’s also possible that workshops just happen spontaneously between participants.

Practical stuff

Date & time: Saturday 17th February 2018 till Tuesday 20th February 2018.

Arrival on Saturday from 14:00, welcome with coffee and sweets. Around 15:00 we’ll do a quick introduction round and check if the participants are interested in a workshop on Sunday or Monday morning.

Departure on Tuesday after lunch, around 14:00.

We’ll set aside the chairs in the big hall and place a large table, very useful for measuring and cutting your big pattern parts. We’ll place several desks as well at which you can set yourself up, with your own sewing machine for example. We will provide a sewing machine that you may use as well.

In the living room/dining room you’ll find some comfortable chairs and benches where you can work on your needlework. It’s even better while you’re enjoying a glass of wine and sitting near a crisping fire.

Of course you can always retreat to your own room or to one of the beautiful places outside. During the retreat there won’t be any other groups in or around the premises.

Stay and costs

The price for the retreat is €485,- per person. The accommodation fees (full board) are €289,- per person based on a single room.

The rooms have their own shower and toilet, made beds and towels. (During your visit the beds won’t be made again and the towels won’t be refreshed – your room stays your room.)
