60% Baby Alpaca, 40% Pima Cotton
Per 50 g skein, length approx. 155 m
Fair Trade yarn from South America
Washing instructions: hand wash only.
Pima cotton was named after a tribe of Native Americans, who were the first to produce it on a large scale. Pima cotton has a stronger and finer fiber than ordinary cotton. The fiber is also longer, therefore this fabric is softer and has more sheen to it. It absorbs and hold the dye better, so the colours stay fresh much longer. Pima cotton is also more hard wearing than ordinary cotton, because the fibers are much stronger. Moreover, Pima cotton is more environmentally friendly, because the production is less harmful than that of other types of cotton.
Alpaca fiber is classified not by age of the animal, but by the diameter of the hair. Baby alpaca is the finest, softest yarn, and it is highly prized for knitting and other crafts.
Manos del Uruguay
Manos del Uruguay produces Fair Trade certified yarns. They're also working on getting a certification for animal welfare. The yarns are produced in South America.
Manos del Uruguay was established in 1968. Their goal was to enable women living in the countryside to gain a fair income. To achieve this they fell back to the materials that were abundantly available locally – wool – and the traditional skills of the people. Thanks to the employment that Manos provides, people can stay in their villages with their families, instead of splitting up and living in shanty towns.
Serena is suitable for many types of projects. It is much loved for baby and kids clothing. And a simple scarf or shawl will become your new favourite garment if you make it with Serena.
