Brioche Stitch for Dummies

This stitch is known as brioche, prime rib or fisherman's rib. It makes very supple and elastic knitting.

There are many different ways to knit the brioche stitch. This tutorial explains a very simple way to knit brioche in one colour.

If you know how to knit and purl stitches, you can do this too.

Brioche for Dummies in short:

It's almost the same as knitting a knit-1, purl-1 rib.

  • Cast on any number of stitches.
  • Row 1: knit 1, purl 1 as you would normally.
  • Knit or purl every first and last stitch normally.
  • From row 2: purl as usual. For every knit stitch, insert the needle in the stitch underneath the one on the knitting needle.

That's all!

  • Cast on any number of stitches:

Brioche 1

  • Row 1: knit 1, purl 1 "normally".

Brioche 2

  • Brioche knitting starts at row 2.
  • Knit or purl every first and last stitch of the row "normally" In this case we start with a normal purl:

Brioche 3

  • All knit stitches: insert the needle into the stitch underneath the one on the knitting needle.
  • Normally you would insert the needle here:

    Brioche 4

  • Instead, insert into the stitch underneath:

    Brioche 5

  • Insert, wrap and pull through like you would with a "normal" knit stitch:

Brioche 6

  • Purl the next stitch normally.
  • Again for the knit stitch after that, insert underneath.
  • Do this for the entire row.
  • Knit or purl the very last stitch of the row normally.

And so on. Knit all rows in this way. Every first and last stitch, knit or purl normally. All purls are normal too. For all knit stitches, insert the needle into the stitch underneath the one on the left hand knitting needle.
